Understanding Addiction and Co-Occurring Trauma: An Evidence-Based Approach

Addiction and trauma frequently occur together, and treating one while ignoring the other rarely leads to lasting change. Effective treatment addresses both at once, not in sequence.

Why Addiction and Trauma Overlap So Often

Substances often start as a way to manage unbearable feelings, numbing intrusive memories, hypervigilance, or emotional overwhelm connected to unresolved trauma. Over time, the substance use itself becomes its own problem, layered on top of the original one.

Why Treating Only One Side Doesn't Hold

Addressing substance use without addressing the trauma underneath it tends to leave someone without their coping mechanism and still carrying the original pain, which raises relapse risk. Addressing trauma without accounting for active substance use can also stall progress.

An Integrated, Evidence-Based Approach

Treatment combines CBT and DBT-informed skills for managing cravings and regulating emotion, with trauma-focused work addressing what's underneath the substance use, paced and sequenced according to what's safe and workable for you.

This work is also available where continuity of care matters, collaborating with physicians, case managers, and treatment centres. Virtual sessions are offered across Ontario, with a free 15-minute consultation to start.
